Description
“Birelogy” is a collection of 10 transcribed guitar solos by Birèli Lagrène, one of the central figures in the revival of gypsy jazz and, by any measure, one of the most complete guitarists alive today. Assembled and transcribed by Dario Napoli, the book draws from recordings across Lagrène’s career, including tracks from albums such as “Move,” “Complete Gipsy Project,” and collaborative sessions with fellow masters like Angelo Debarre and the Rosenberg Trio, covering a repertoire that ranges from jazz standards like Donna Lee and Viper’s Dream to original and folk-inflected pieces. The premise rests on a truth that runs through the whole tradition: every great player learned by absorbing those who came before, and in gypsy jazz, that process of deep listening, copying, and internalizing has always been the primary path. By placing Lagrène’s solos under the microscope, the book offers more than a set of transcriptions to learn note by note. It invites the player into the internal logic of a modern master’s musical mind, with the goal of eventually finding their own voice, the same way Lagrène himself found his.
